Still Life

I love to paint still life subjects because this subject matter gives me the ability to arrange the subject into anything I wish. Compositions can be created and changed quickly. Lighting is up to me and might be dramatic or soft. A still life painting is the orchestra and the painter is the conductor, who draws beautiful music from the arrangement. I am well-known for my series of baseball caps and gloves featuring Major League baseball gear from the New York Yankees, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs, the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers. This series began with a painting of my husband’s ball glove and first base mitt in 2007 and has been very successful.

I have an ongoing series of 6” x 6” food paintings displayed on my blog for under $100 and these are popular and highly collectible too. Fruit, cake, wine, even pancakes, have all inspired me to work from life and create my own personal interpretations. My still life paintings are quite realistic from afar but when you view them closely it’s obvious you are seeing a painting. The brush strokes are apparent and the color is usually heightened. Often I will exaggerate the values to add drama or mood.
